WICKETS TUMBLE, RUNS FUMBLE, RAINS STUMBLE
Another day, another rain, another No result. TNPL 2021 started on a high on both the match days but had a dull finish in a wash out for the 4 teams which have played till now, fetching each 1 point. Chepauk for the past two days has been experiencing a different scenario, the pitch assisting the batters yesterday and the pitch assisting the medium pacers today. A pitch famous for the turn and twist for the batsmen has been heaven for one and hell for other.
Today, the defending champions Chepauk Super Gillies clashed against the newly named IDream Tiruppur Tamizhans, who were previously known as IDream Karaikudi Kaalai. Sported in Purple jersey, they went through a purple patch right from the word “GO”. The fielding team captain Kaushik Gandhi gave the ball to the experienced and old warhorse veteran in the Tamilnadu Circuit, Rajagopal Satish to start the proceedings and as believed by the captain, the warrior started roaring. He took opener S Dinesh in the 2nd ball of the innings with a fuller ball outside the off stump only to be driven and neatly given to the man behind the stumps, the dynamic N Jagadeesan. The screws were applied tightly and the fist over yielded just a run.
Next came Rahul Dev, who then took off from where Satish left. A wide outside the off stump delivery, the man who departed next was the other opener S Siddharth who edged it to R Satish at first slip and the veteran didn't lose it and dived and pounced to his left and choked the opposition. The over was completed with neat boundaries to the backward square leg and backward point by S Aravind and Tushar Raheja.
Just when things were a little bit better, R Satish came again hunting. He rollicked the opposition with back to back wickets of S Aravind and P Francis Rokins with the former gifting himself to the wicketkeeper Jagadeesan and the latter getting hit on his legs plumb before the stumps. The score read 15/4 in 3 overs with R Satish reading 2-0-3-3.
Things got really worse for the opposition when the ball again was handed to Satish who picked Tushar Raheja and Rajkumar with the former getting dismissed in the same fashion of gifting himself to the wicketkeeper and the latter giving away himself with a hit on the pads. R Satish ended with figures of 4-0-10-5 with an economy of 2.5 and he registered the first 5-fer of the tournament and the second best across editions. The score read 30/6 in 7 overs. Harish Kumar, the new bowler from the CSG setup, started his first over and ensured wicket was up the sleeves for the franchise when he hit the batter Maan K Baafna with a straight in line delivery, only to be hit on his pads and get confused. When the opportunity comes knocking, grab it with both hands was what substitute Radhakrishan did. He ran out Maan K Baafna from the slips similar to the fashion in which Rishab Pant was run out by Suresh Rana in IPL 2017. IDTT was sinking in the ship they boarded.
After came in Aswin Crist, and he ensured that he played with utmost caution. Both captain Mohammed and Aswin made sure that no more wickets would fall and that they would survive the opposition attack and register some score on the boards. Aswin found gaps and used the opportunity to hit the ball to the fences with ease. Chepauk didn’t ooze out. Captain Kaushik Gandhi choked the opposition by introducing the spin attack of Siddharth and Alexander with able support from medium pacer Harish Kumar.
Just as things were slightly becoming better, the rain gods stumbled upon Chennai and showered the ground with water. The match went on till 10:51 PM IST without remorse from the rain gods and the rain puddles played a major role in the ground and the match was called off by the on field umpires. One team went home disappointed and the other” relieved” with a point each.
Brief Scores: IDream Tiruppur Tamizhans 64-7 in 16.2 overs (Aswin Crist 23*, Mohammed 10*, R Satish 5-10, Dev Rahul 1-13) vs Chepauk Super Gillies. Match abandoned due to rain.
