As the IPL 2025 season approaches, Delhi Capitals (DC) have assembled a formidable squad, blending young talent with experienced campaigners. DC have always been an exciting team, yet they have struggled to cross the final hurdle. Their best season came in 2020 when they had a perfectly balanced side, but since then, they have failed to build an ideal lineup. This year, however, DC have made some bold and exciting moves in the auction, signalling their intent to go all the way.
After an underwhelming campaign last year, DC adopted an aggressive strategy, securing the experience of Indian superstar KL Rahul, the leadership of Faf du Plessis, and the fiery pacer in Mitchell Starc. Under the captaincy of Axar Patel and Vice captaincy of Faf Du Plessis, the team looks well-equipped for a strong run this season.
Before the auction, DC retained key players including skipper Axar Patel, young batting sensation Tristan Stubbs, talented wicketkeeper-batsman Abhishek Porel, and star spinner Kuldeep Yadav.
Strengths:
One of DC’s biggest assets this season is their powerful batting unit. The addition of KL Rahul at the top provides them with a dependable yet aggressive opener who can anchor the innings and accelerate when needed. Partnering him could be Jake Fraser-McGurk, who impressed everyone with his attacking approach last season, or the ever-reliable Faf du Plessis, whose vast experience makes him a valuable asset. This trio gives DC a formidable opening combination.
DC’s bowling attack has been significantly bolstered with the acquisition of Mitchell Starc. His sheer pace and ability to deliver in crucial moments add a new dimension to the team’s bowling. Alongside him, T. Natarajan's pinpoint accuracy in the death overs makes DC’s attack even more dangerous. Mukesh Kumar and Mohit Sharma provide solid backup, adding depth to their pace department.
The spin attack is another stronghold for DC, with skipper Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav forming a potent duo. Both have the ability to control the middle overs and pick up crucial wickets.
Weaknesses:
The biggest concern for DC this season is their middle order. With Harry Brook opting out, the responsibility now falls heavily on Tristan Stubbs. While Stubbs is a promising talent, he will need support from the Indian contingent. The middle order remains unconvincing, but the addition of Karun Nair could be an X-factor. Meanwhile, Ashutosh Sharma might provide some stability in the lower order. KL Rahul might demote himself as middle order to provide stability.
Steal Buys in the Auction:
Faf du Plessis (₹2 Cr)
Arguably DC’s best buy of the auction, Faf du Plessis brings immense experience and leadership skills. While Axar Patel leads the squad and Faf named as VC, his presence will be invaluable in guiding the team on the field. Getting such a reliable batter and leader for just ₹2 crore is a masterstroke.
Sameer Rizvi (₹95 Lakhs)
Another brilliant buy for DC was Sameer Rizvi. Last year, he was picked up for over ₹8 crore by CSK but didn’t get many opportunities. This year, DC secured him for just ₹75 lakhs—a bargain for a young, promising Indian middle-order batsman.
Players to Watch Out For:
KL Rahul:
All eyes will be on KL Rahul, who not only strengthens DC’s top order but also brings immense experience and composure. After gaining momentum in the Champions Trophy, his confidence is sky-high. However, given that his last IPL season wasn’t his best, he has a point to prove. If he finds his rhythm, he could be among the top run-getters of the season.
Tristan Stubbs:
A future superstar of the IPL, Tristan Stubbs is another player to keep an eye on. He showed glimpses of his potential last season, but this year, he needs to step up and deliver match-winning performances consistently.

Our Prediction:
With a solid squad, experienced leaders, and a well-balanced bowling attack, Delhi Capitals have a strong chance of making a deep run in IPL 2025. Their biggest challenge will be their middle order, but if players like Stubbs and KL Rahul step up, DC could be a serious title contender this season. DC have an opportunity to cross the line this time and they have a chance to enter top 4.
