After 8 long years, the ICC's mini–World Cup edition, the Champions Trophy, is back, bringing significant changes within the squads of various countries. The first major change for New Zealand is Mitchell Santner taking over the reins from veteran Kane Williamson.
Since winning the title in 2000, the journey has not been smooth for the Kiwis in the Champions Trophy. Over the years, the team has undergone several changes and transitions, but this time, the squad has seen a major transformation. Notable veterans like Trent Boult and Jimmy Neesham have been omitted from the squad, while Tim Southee has retired from international cricket. From the last edition, only Kane Williamson, Tom Latham, and Mitchell Santner remain in the current squad.
The 2025 edition squad sees some strong development in the allrounder department with as many as 7 allrounders named in the squad. Youngster Nathan Smith after impressive performances in domestic circuit got his major global tournament callup. Other allrounders named are Daryl Mitchell, Michael Bracewell, Rachin Ravindra* who have been consistent performers. The pace heavy bowling department sees two young pace sensations in Will O’Rourke and Ben sears** along with Lockie Ferguson and Matt Henry. The batting department is one of their strongest cores consisting of Tom Latham, Devon Conway, Will Young and Kane Williamson.
*Rachin Ravindra is doubtful for the opening match as he got hit on the face during the first ODI vs Pakistan while attempting to catch.
**Ben Sears has been replaced by Jacob Duffy due to Sears getting injured during the tri series involving Pakistan and South Africa.
Overall the squad looks solid and will be looking to change their fortunes in the tournament. NewZealand will be playing their opening match against the host country Pakistan on 19th Februrary 2025.
