IPL 2022 is to be played between 10 teams with the inclusion of two new franchises – Lucknow and Ahmedabad. The 8 old franchises will be allowed to retain up to four players from their current squad before the IPL 2022 mega auction. The two new franchises will get the opportunity to pick three players each from the remaining pool of players.
IPL Retention Rules:
The salary purse for all IPL teams would be Rs 90 crore. A maximum of three Indian players can be retained by the franchise whereas a maximum of two foreign players could be retained out of the cumulative 4 retention option.
In case a team wants to retain 4 players, the franchises will be charged Rs 16 crore for the first player they retain, Rs 12 crore for the second player, Rs 8 crore for the third player and Rs 6 crore for the fourth player. A cumulative amount of Rs 42 crore will be deducted from the purse for retaining 4 players.
The deduction for 3 players will be summed at Rs 33 crore with the first player coming at Rs 15 crore while the second player costing Rs 11 crore and the third player coming at Rs 7 crore.
In case where a franchise wants to retain only two players, the retention amount will be Rs 14 crore for the first player and Rs 10 crore for the second and final player. The deduction from the purse for two retentions comes to Rs 24 crore.
A staggering amount of Rs 14 crore will be charged for a single retention where the franchises opt to retain only one player.
There will be no Right To Match (RTM) cards available this time.
Retention Options:
Sunrisers Hyderabad – With news of David Warner wanting to move away from the franchise, there are only two possible retention options for SRH. Kane Williamson and Rashid Khan will most likely be the two preferred players for the Hyderabad management with Kane giving them a captaincy option.
Possible Retentions:
Kane Williamson (Rs 14 crore)
Rashid Khan (Rs 10 crore)
Punjab Kings – There is only one player from PBKS who deserves the first retention. If not for KL Rahul, the Punjab Kings should look to rebuild their team by not retaining any player from the current squad.
Possible Retentions:
KL Rahul (Rs 14 crore)
Rajasthan Royals – The Rajasthan franchise should also look at re-building their complete squad and save their purse for the same. None of their player seem worthy of Rs 14+ crore.
Kolkata Knight Riders – KKR have players like Sunil Narine, Andre Russell, Dinesh Karthik, Eoin Morgan, Varun Chakravarthy, Venkatesh Iyer, Shubman Gill and Rahul Tripathi who are all good contenders for the retentions. Theirs is going to be the most exciting draw for the retentions to look for.
Possible Retentions:
Sunil Narine (Rs 16 crore)
Andre Russell (Rs 12 crore)
Varun Chakravarthy / Shubman Gill (8 crore)
Rahul Tripathi / Venkatesh Iyer (Rs 6 crore)
Royal Challengers Bangalore – RCB has the best chance to right the wrongs of all the previous seasons by looking beyond Ab de Villers and build their team with the Indian core. They have Virat Kohli who will be their first-choice retention without question. Their foreign retention is most likely to be Glenn Maxwell. And the two remaining choices that the Royals have will be between - Devdutta Padikkal, Yuzvendra Chahal and Mohhamad Siraj.
RCB can also look to make an out of the box move by retaining Kona Shrikar Bharat who is a genuine talent with the bat and adds the option of wicket-keeping to the side.
Possible Retentions:
Virat Kohli (Rs 16 crore)
Glenn Maxwell (Rs 12 crore)
M Siraj (Rs 8 crore)
Yuzi Chahal/ KS Bharat (Rs 6 crore)
Delhi Capitals – DC is one other team who have various options for retentions. Rishabh Pant will be the first-choice retention who will also lead the side. Besides him, they have Prithvi Shaw, Shikhar Dhawan, Shreyas Iyer, Ravichandran Ashwin, Axar Patel and Avesh Khan from Indian contingent who are the contenders. Their most likely foreign options are either of Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje.
Possible Retentions:
Rishabh Pant (Rs 16 crore)
Shreyas Iyer / Ravichandra Ashwin (Rs 12 crore)
Kagiso Rabada (Rs 8 crore)
Prithvi Shaw (Rs 6 crore)
Mumbai Indians – MI have two straight forward choice with Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah being their prime retention options. Their foreign retention contender is Kieron Pollard, whereas the final retention choice could be between Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya.
Possible Retentions:
Rohit Sharma (Rs 16 crore)
Jasprit Bumrah (Rs 12 crore)
Kieron Pollard (8 crore)
Ishan Kishan/ Suryakumar Yadav/ Hardik Pandya (6 crore)
Chennai Super Kings – The conundrum of should MS Dhoni be retained and how long will he play is yet again at the fore. But as far as the CSK franchise is concerned, he is their man without any question mark and hence Dhoni could once again be their first retention choice. Ravindra Jadeja, Ambati Rayudu, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shardul Thakur and Deepak Chahar are their prime Indian contenders while Faf du Plessis, Dwayne Bravo and Moeen Ali are the foreigners between whom the choice will be made. Suresh Raina in all likeliness will part ways unless CSK has the option to buy him back in the auctions.
Possible Retentions:
MS Dhoni (Rs 16 crore)
Ravindra Jadeja (Rs 12 crore)
Faf du Plessis / Moeen Ali (Rs 8 crore)
Ruturaj Gaikwad (Rs 6 crore)
The notable point during this retention will be that the old franchises could lose the option of buying back their prime players who aren’t retained, because the two new franchises – Lucknow and Ahmedabad – will initially get the opportunity to pick three players each from the remaining pool of players with an allotted budget of Rs 33 crore (between Dec 1 to Dec 25) prior to the main mega auctions expected to be held in late December 2021 or early 2022.
Retention List Announcement – 30th November 2021
